Kendrick Lamar wins big at BET Awards

Kendrick lamar was the star of the BET Awards in Los Angeles, taking home five awards, including best album, best video and male hip-hop artist. The awards celebrate black actors, singers and sports figures.
Lamar won best album for GNX and best video for “not Like Us.” He and filmmaker Dave Free also won video director of the year. The BET Awards,hosted by Kevin Hart,highlighted Lamar’s significant impact on hip-hop and culture.
“BET has always made sure they’re representing the culture right and always put me in the midst of the cycle of what we represent,” Lamar said.
Doechii, winner of best female hip-hop artist, used her acceptance speech too criticize President Donald Trump for deploying military forces against protesters in Los Angeles. demonstrations followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Latino communities.
“I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us,” doechii said.
Ultimate icon awards were presented to Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin and Jamie Foxx for their achievements in music, entertainment, advocacy and community impact. Stevie Wonder presented Foxx with his award, and Foxx spoke about his recovery from a stroke in 2023.
“I gotta be honest, when I saw the in memoriam [segment], I was like, ‘Man, that could have been me’,” Foxx said.
Carey, presented her award by Busta Rhymes, said, “this means so much. If you’re gonna get one, might as well start with the Ultimate Icon Award.” she added, “My life and career have been quite the adventure. I will spare you the long,drawn-out saga tonight,” while praising her fellow honorees. The awards ceremony also honored Cynthia Erivo (best actress) and Denzel Washington (best actor).
The ceremony featured performances by Ashanti, Lil Kim, Jim Jones, Amerie, Keyshia Cole, Mya, TI, B2K, Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri.
