Kennedy Jr. Insists Autism “Epidemic” Caused by “Environmental Toxin
Kennedy Jr. Claims Autism an ‘Epidemic,’ Links to Environmental Factors
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has reiterated his stance that autism is an ”epidemic that eclipses COVID,” renewing his attacks on vaccines, which he has repeatedly linked to the disorder.
In an interview on WABC 770 AM, Kennedy Jr. stated, “It is an epidemic. It eclipses COVID and its consequences because COVID killed older people. Autism affects children, and at the beginning of their lives, when they begin to be productive. It is indeed somthing that weakens both them and their families and their communities.”
Rising Costs and future Concerns
Kennedy Jr. also claimed the rising rate of autism in the U.S. carries a notable financial burden. “It will be $1 billion a year by 2025,” he said. “It is only the beginning, because many of these children are growing, and their parents are worried every day.”
He further elaborated on the challenges faced by families with autistic children, saying, “Those families with children who do not speak, who do not go to the bathroom alone, who have the typical conditions of autism—head movement, tiptoeing, self-stimulation, chronic intestinal pain… Those children will not have a job, and many have a tremendous potential to live autonomously, have a job, and take care of themselves.”
Criticism of Genetic Research
Kennedy Jr. criticized the scientific community’s focus on genetics in autism research. He asserted, “They have blocked studies that would demonstrate that the cause is environmental. Instead, they study genes, but I have already said it, an environmental toxin is necessary, and it is what we are looking for now.”
He added that his team plans to use artificial intelligence and “the best scientific protocols” to identify potential environmental factors.”We have 15 teams to study all possible exhibitions such as mold, food additives, pesticides, vaccines or ultrasound,” Kennedy Jr. said.
Reactions to Kennedy’s Position
Kennedy’s views on autism have drawn considerable criticism from lawmakers and advocacy groups, who have labeled them “disrespectful” and “misleading.”
Kristyn Roth, a spokesperson for the American Autism Society, stated, “Talking about autism as a chronic disease, and starting terms such as ‘epidemic’, only dehumanizes the autistic and perpetuates their stigma and stereotypes.”
CDC’s Outlook
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that autism is more likely in families with a history of the condition, in cases where the mother experienced complications during childbirth, or when chromosomal conditions are present. The CDC also suggests that the increase in reported autism cases is partly due to improved detection methods.
Promise to Find Environmental Link
kennedy Jr. has vowed to identify the “environmental toxin” he believes is responsible for the rise in autism cases. As reported by NBC News,he stated,”Genes do not cause epidemics.”
“We know that it is an environmental exposure. It has to be,” Kennedy Jr. insisted. He said that studies aimed at identifying these “environmental toxins” will be announced in the coming weeks.
