EVANSVILLE, IN – The University of Kentucky baseball team continues its early-season road trip this weekend with a doubleheader against Evansville, with live radio coverage available to fans through the UK Sports Network. Andrew Kappes will be on the call for both games, providing play-by-play commentary and analysis.

Friday’s series opener, originally scheduled for February 20th, saw Kappes joined by Kentucky head coach Nick Mingione during the pregame show, offering insights into the team’s preparations and expectations for the series. A player interview also featured, giving fans a chance to hear directly from a member of the Wildcats roster.

Saturday’s schedule features a twinbill, beginning at February 21st at 12:45 PM ET for the first game. The second game will follow approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. Kappes will continue to provide live coverage for both contests, with Coach Mingione expected to rejoin him during the pregame of the first game and potentially after the conclusion of the doubleheader.

The trip to Evansville represents an early-season test for the No. 18 ranked Kentucky Wildcats, following a recent homestand that included a midweek matchup against Morehead State. While the result of that game wasn’t favorable for the Wildcats, the team is looking to rebound with a strong showing against the Purple Aces. Kentucky’s performance in 2023, finishing with a 40-21 record and hosting an NCAA Regional, sets a high bar for expectations this season.

Coach Mingione recently addressed the media at Kentucky Baseball Media Day, discussing his team and the upcoming season. The Wildcats’ success in 2023, which included winning the Lexington Regional before falling to LSU in the Baton Rouge Super Regional, has generated considerable excitement among fans and within the program. The team’s ability to build on that momentum will be a key storyline to watch throughout the 2026 season.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC), of which Kentucky is a member, continues to be a powerhouse in collegiate athletics. The conference, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, boasts 16 member institutions and participates in NCAA Division I competitions, including the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The SEC’s competitive landscape consistently ranks among the most challenging in the nation, and Kentucky’s baseball program faces a demanding conference schedule in addition to non-conference matchups like the one against Evansville.

Fans can tune in to the games via the UK Sports Network radio broadcasts. Friday’s game can be heard on NewsRadio 630 WLAP, while both Saturday games will be broadcast on 98.5 Icons. The broadcasts provide an opportunity for fans to follow the team’s progress and stay connected to the program, even while on the road.

The series against Evansville offers an early glimpse into Kentucky’s potential for the 2026 season. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, Coach Mingione’s team is aiming to build on its recent success and contend for a championship in the highly competitive SEC. The radio coverage, featuring Kappes and Mingione, will provide fans with valuable insights and analysis throughout the weekend.

The Wildcats will be looking to establish a consistent offensive rhythm and solid pitching performances against Evansville. The ability to execute fundamental baseball skills and maintain focus throughout the doubleheader will be crucial for securing a series victory. The coaching staff will likely emphasize the importance of minimizing errors and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

Beyond the immediate games against Evansville, Kentucky’s schedule includes a number of challenging matchups against SEC opponents. The conference schedule is known for its intensity and competitiveness, and the Wildcats will need to be prepared to face top-tier programs on a regular basis. The team’s performance in non-conference games, like the series against Evansville, will help build confidence and momentum heading into those crucial SEC contests.

The addition of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC in 2024 further strengthens the conference’s position as a national leader in collegiate athletics. The expanded membership brings new rivalries and challenges, and Kentucky will need to adapt to the evolving landscape of the SEC. The conference’s commitment to excellence and its dedication to providing a platform for student-athletes to succeed continue to drive its success.
