Kenyan Runner Wins Taipei Marathon, Misses Course Record in Chilly Conditions
Taipei, Taiwan – despite chilly temperatures, over 28,000 runners took to the streets of Taipei for the annual marathon on December 15th. Kenyan athlete Brimin Kipkori emerged victorious, crossing the finish line in an remarkable 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 41 seconds. Though, the challenging conditions prevented him from breaking the course record.
This year’s taipei Marathon marked a important milestone, achieving recognition from World Athletics (WA) and earning a coveted Gold Label status. The event attracted a record-breaking 4,380 international runners, including elite athletes from Japan, Kenya, Ethiopia, and eritrea.
While the race began under ideal conditions with a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and no rain, high humidity proved to be a challenge for the runners.Kipkori, who boasts a personal best of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 53 seconds, maintained a strong pace for the majority of the race. Though, he slowed down after the 35-kilometer mark, ultimately falling short of the course record of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 18 seconds.
“It’s my first time competing in Taiwan,” Kipkori shared after the race. “I ran all the way after the start. Sadly, the back part of the track was tough, so the pace was a little low. It’s a pity that I couldn’t break the record on the track.”
Ethiopian runner Fozia Jemal Amed secured second place with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 47 seconds. This marked her second Gold Label event in Taiwan this year,following her victory at the Stone Marathon in March.
Amed praised the beauty of the Taipei marathon course and the favorable weather conditions. Though, she expressed disappointment at the lack of pacers, which she believes hindered her chances of breaking the women’s course record of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 55 seconds.
