Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Opposes Modi Govt’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ Gambit
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed strong opposition to the ‘one country, one election’ stand, stating that it is an attempt to neutralize the federal system in India and concentrate all power in the central government.
According to Vijayan, the BJP’s insistence on implementing a single-member electoral system, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is a ploy to undermine the diverse nature of India’s parliamentary democracy. The Union Cabinet has approved the Ram Nath Kovind Committee report, paving the way for the implementation of this system.
Vijayan accused the Sangh Parivar of secretly attempting to bring electoral politics in India into a presidential style. He emphasized that each state has a unique situation and background, and that automatic holding of elections or imposition of the central government’s mandate would destroy democracy.
The Chief Minister urged the democratic society of the country to come forward against the moves of the Sangh Parivar to subvert India’s parliamentary democratic system and the very idea of India.
