Kerala is experiencing widespread rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for 12 districts across the state. The weather system, active since the morning of April 19, 2026, has brought moderate to heavy rain to several regions, prompting authorities to suspend school operations in affected areas as a precautionary measure.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin released at 08:30 IST on April 19, districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad are under yellow alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity. The alert signifies the potential for localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and disruption to outdoor activities, particularly during peak rainfall periods.

In Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, rainfall intensity reached between 15 to 25 mm per hour during the morning hours, leading to temporary water accumulation on urban roads and delays in commuter traffic. School administrations in these districts announced the suspension of classes for the day, citing safety concerns for students and staff. Similar measures were implemented in parts of Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, where localized flooding was reported in low-lying zones near riverbanks and canal networks.

IMD officials attributed the current weather pattern to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea, which is drawing moist winds inland and triggering convective activity over the Western Ghats and adjacent plains. The system is expected to remain active over the next 24 to 36 hours, with rainfall likely to intensify in the southern and central districts before gradually weakening by April 21.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through flooded routes, and to secure loose objects outdoors that could be displaced by strong gusts. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has activated its monitoring cells and coordinated with local panchayats and municipal corporations to ensure timely response to any emergent situations. Emergency helplines remain operational, and relief teams are on standby in vulnerable zones.

While the rainfall brings temporary relief from the rising temperatures observed in early April, meteorologists caution that it does not signal the onset of the southwest monsoon, which typically arrives over Kerala in the first week of June. Instead, the current activity is classified as pre-monsoon convection, a common phenomenon during the transitional period between summer and monsoon seasons.

As of 14:00 IST on April 19, the IMD reported that rainfall activity had begun to ease in northern districts such as Kasaragod and Kannur, while central and southern regions continued to experience intermittent showers. No major incidents of structural damage or landslides have been reported so far, though authorities continue to monitor hill slopes and embankments in ecologically sensitive areas like Idukki and Wayanad.
