Kerr Slams ‘Unconscionable’ Foul Call in Warriors’ NBA Cup Loss to Rockets
Kerr Erupts After Controversial Call Costs Warriors in NBA Cup Upset
HOUSTON – Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr unleashed a fiery post-game tirade, calling a late foul call “unconscionable” after his team’s stunning 91-90 loss to the Houston Rockets in the NBA Cup Quarterfinals Wednesday night.
The controversial call came with 11 seconds remaining and the Warriors clinging to a one-point led. After Stephen curry missed a 3-pointer, Gary Payton II grabbed the offensive rebound but turned it over, leading to a steal by Jalen Green. As both players scrambled for the loose ball, jonathan Kuminga was whistled for a foul on Green, sending the Rockets guard to the free throw line for two shots that sealed the victory.
EJ, Charles, Kenny & Shaq dive deep into the final possessions between the Warriors and Rockets in their NBA Cup Quarterfinal.
“That is unconscionable,” Kerr fumed. “I mean,I don’t even understand what just happened.”
Kerr argued that the play should have resulted in a jump ball or a timeout for the Rockets, who were attempting to call one.
“Our guys battled back, played their (expletives) off and deserved to win that game or at least have a chance for one stop at the end to finish the game,” he said. “And that was taken from us by a call that I don’t think an elementary school referee would have made.As that guy would have had feel and said: ‘You know what I’m not going to decide a game on a loose ball 80 feet from the basket.’”
Crew chief Billy Kennedy defended the call, stating that Kuminga made contact with Green’s neck and shoulder area, warranting a foul.Kerr’s frustration extended beyond the final call, as he also expressed anger over what he perceived as a missed foul on Curry earlier in the game.
“The game was a complete wrestling match,” Kerr said. “They didn’t call anything. Steph Curry got hit on the elbow plain as day on a jump shot, just clubbed right on there and no call. So, you’ve established that you’re just not going to call anything throughout the game, it’s a physical game. Then you’re going to call a loose ball foul on a jump ball situation with guys diving on the floor with the game on the line?”
The loss snapped the warriors’ 15-game winning streak against the Rockets, marking Houston’s first victory in the series since February 20,2020.
The Rockets advance to the NBA Cup Semifinals, while the Warriors are left to lick their wounds and ponder what could have been.
