Both teams arrived at a sold-out Mounthawk Park in good form, each unbeaten in their last three league and cup games.However, it was the Premier Division side, Sligo Rovers, who ultimately weathered a late Kerry FC storm on a damp evening in the southwest.
Sligo Rovers attempted to establish control early in the contest, while Colin Healy’s Kerry FC side looked for opportunities on the counter-attack, aiming to reach their first FAI Cup semi-final against a Premier Division opponent.
Kerry FC’s hopes appeared to be fading when Owen Elding scored a quickfire double within the first 16 minutes, silencing the home crowd.
Elding opened the scoring in the 14th minute, rising above the Kerry defense to head home a deep cross from James McManus off the far post. Just 90 seconds later, he doubled the lead with a superb half-volley, finishing a headed flick-on from Sebastian quirk.
