Several Irish restaurants have been recognised for their remarkable wine programmes in Wine Spectator’s prestigious 2025 Restaurant awards. The annual awards, launched in 1981, celebrate establishments globally that demonstrate a commitment to thoughtfully curated wine lists, appropriate pairings with their cuisine, and appeal to a diverse range of wine lovers.
Celebrating Excellence in Wine & Dining
This year saw an extraordinary 3,811 restaurants worldwide earning the coveted Wine Spectator awards, each lauded for its “distinctive styles, enticing menus and stellar wine lists.” the awards are tiered, recognising varying levels of achievement: 2,150 restaurants received the Award of Excellence, 1,531 earned the Best of Award of Excellence, and 97 were granted the highest honor, the grand Award – with three new restaurants joining this elite group in 2025.
Sheen Falls Lodge Leads the Irish Charge
Among the celebrated establishments, Sheen Falls Lodge in County Kerry stood out, securing a ‘Best of Award of Excellence’. This recognition highlights the restaurant’s remarkable wine selection of 450 bottles, many housed within the hotel’s renowned cellar – one of the largest and most respected in Ireland.
To achieve this level of recognition, a restaurant’s wine list must showcase both breadth – spanning multiple winegrowing regions - and depth, with significant vintages from top producers, all presented with exceptional clarity and detail.
Sommelier Juan Ignacio Martinez Cambil expertly manages the impressive inventory of 11,495 bottles sourced from 23 countries.Wine Spectator specifically praised the lodge’s strength in French wines.
“This award is a proud achievement for our entire team,” stated Brian Loughnane, General manager of Sheen Falls Lodge.”Our Restaurant Manager Benjamin Benke and Sommelier Juan Cambil have curated a wine list that not only reflects depth and regional diversity, but also perfectly complements the dining experience we offer at The Falls Restaurant, headed by our acclaimed Executive Chef Mark Treacy.”
