The intersection of celebrity, mental health, and emerging treatments continues to draw attention, with ketamine therapy becoming an increasingly public topic of discussion. While historically known as a party drug and anesthetic, ketamine is now being explored – and embraced by some high-profile individuals – as a potential treatment for conditions like treatment-resistant depression. This trend is sparking both interest and debate within the medical community and beyond.

Chrissy Teigen recently revealed she underwent ketamine therapy to mark her 38th birthday, sharing that the experience allowed her to connect with her late son, Jack, whom she lost during a pregnancy in September 2020. This deeply personal account adds to a growing narrative of celebrities openly discussing their use of ketamine infusion therapy. Matthew Perry, prior to his passing in October 2023, and Sharon Osbourne have also spoken publicly about utilizing the treatment to address their mental health challenges.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) defines ketamine as a “dissociative anesthetic that has some hallucinogenic effects,” capable of inducing “sedation, immobility, relief from pain, and amnesia.” While it has a history as a recreational drug, ketamine is an “approved medical product as an injectable, short-acting anesthetic for use in humans and animals and as a nasal spray (Spravato) for treatment-resistant depression.” Esketamine, the ketamine-derived nasal spray marketed as Spravato, received FDA approval for treatment-resistant depression. However, the FDA issued a warning in October 2023 regarding the use of ketamine in non-injectable forms, citing safety concerns including potential for sedation, dissociation, psychiatric events, abuse, and increases in blood pressure.

Despite the increasing visibility and anecdotal reports of success, the scientific understanding of ketamine therapy, particularly in oral and nasal formulations, remains limited. Dr. Eric Schwenk of Thomas Jefferson University noted in November 2023 that “There’s just not a lot of good evidence to guide you” regarding these formulations. This lack of robust research and regulation hasn’t stemmed the tide of its use, however, with the therapy gaining traction even among younger patients.

The rise in ketamine therapy isn’t limited to adult celebrities. A September 9, 2025 article highlights a growing, though controversial, trend of parents seeking ketamine treatment for their teenage children struggling with mental health issues. One mother, Jacintha (who requested anonymity to protect her daughter’s privacy), turned to ketamine therapy for her 16-year-old daughter, Lucy, after traditional treatments – including two antidepressants, years of talk therapy, and an intensive outpatient program – proved ineffective. Lucy was diagnosed with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Doctors acknowledge that ketamine therapy can be “life-saving” in cases where other medications have failed. However, they also caution about potential risks, including the possibility of dependence if improperly administered. The desperation of parents facing their child’s suffering often leads them to consider options they might not have previously contemplated. As Jacintha stated, “When people are desperate, you’re ready to take desperate measures.”

The discussion surrounding ketamine therapy is further complicated by the stigma associated with mental health treatment and the potential for misuse. Commenters on platforms like Reddit discuss seeking care for minors, but many are hesitant to go on the record due to fear of judgment. This reluctance underscores the need for open and informed conversations about mental health and the available treatment options.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing mental health challenges, leading to increased reports of mental health problems, and potentially contributing to the increased interest in alternative treatments like ketamine therapy. The therapeutic effects of ketamine are linked to its euphoric, dissociative, and hallucinogenic properties, which have historically led to its abuse as a recreational drug and, strict regulation of its medical use.

The growing acceptance of ketamine therapy, fueled by celebrity endorsements and desperate parents seeking solutions for their children, presents a complex landscape. While the treatment offers hope for those who haven’t found relief through conventional methods, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential risks and the need for further research to establish clear guidelines and ensure patient safety. The conversation is evolving, and the entertainment industry’s willingness to openly discuss these experiences is likely to continue shaping public perception and driving further exploration of this controversial treatment.
