The study involved subjecting pregnant rats to stress during the final week before birth.After weaning at 21 days, the offspring were divided into two groups: a control group receiving a standard diet, and a ketogenic diet group.
At 42 days, the young rats underwent behavioral testing. The results indicated that the rats exposed to prenatal stress and fed a ketogenic diet exhibited fewer behavioral abnormalities compared to those exposed to prenatal stress and fed a control diet. Specifically,the ketogenic diet appeared to normalize stress-induced changes in behavior.
Understanding the biological mechanisms
While the study demonstrates a protective effect, the precise biological mechanisms remain unclear. Researchers hypothesize that the ketogenic diet may influence brain metabolism, neurotransmitter levels, or epigenetic modifications, ultimately altering the way the brain responds to stress. The presented study interestingly shows that prenatal stress-induced risk to altered behaviour can be modulated with a ketogenic diet fed after weaning.It will be intriguing to further explore what are the biological processes involved in these beneficial effects and if such effects are sex specific.”
