kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns forward, reportedly has a short list of preferred trade destinations: the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. ESPN reported the facts late Saturday.
Durant has been on the trade market as Febuary. Despite remaining with the Suns at the trade deadline, speculation persisted after the team’s attempt to trade him to the Golden State Warriors without his consent. The expectation has been that Durant would be traded.
according to Shams Charania, the Suns have told six to eight interested teams they will make the best deal for the franchise, even if it means trading Durant outside his preferred list. The identity of all those teams remains unknown, but the number is larger than Durant’s reported top three.
As the trade deadline, the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks have been mentioned as possible trade partners.
Multiple reports suggest Minnesota has aggressively pursued Durant. Zach Lowe of The Ringer said there was significant buzz surrounding Durant and the Timberwolves. One major sportsbook even listed the Timberwolves as the betting favorite to land Durant.
Beyond those teams, the Toronto Raptors could also emerge as suitors. Reports indicate they plan to be aggressive this offseason. With Giannis Antetokounmpo seemingly staying in Milwaukee,Durant is the only available superstar. The Raptors explored a Durant trade in 2022. Masai Ujiri has a history of trading for stars who may not want to play in Toronto, as he did with Kawhi Leonard in 2018, which resulted in a championship.
Durant may be trying to discourage less desirable suitors by suggesting he is not interested in playing for them. This tactic is common in star trade negotiations, and Durant has used it before.
What’s next
As negotiations intensify and a trade appears imminent, the Suns will likely weigh all offers, considering Durant’s preferences while prioritizing the best return for the franchise. The coming weeks could determine where the star forward plays next season.
