Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently offered a candid look into the inner workings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, addressing everything from the rising costs of filmmaking to the evolving role of artificial intelligence and the studio’s long-standing commitment to test screenings. In a wide-ranging discussion,Feige shed light on the challenges and strategies shaping the future of blockbuster cinema.
the Shifting Economics of Big-Budget Films
Feige acknowledged the notable financial pressures facing major film productions, notably in the wake of the pandemic. He pointed out a notable decrease in the cost of making movies over the past two years compared to the preceding period.
“The movies made over the last two years have been upwards of a third cheaper than they were two years before that,” Feige explained. He cited upcoming projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America, Thunderbolts, and fantastic Four as examples of films that are considerably less expensive than those released in 2022 and 2023. He also noted that these costs woudl have been even lower had it not been for the recent industry strikes.
AI’s Role in VFX and Cost Reduction
The conversation also turned to the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the visual effects (VFX) landscape. Feige expressed a degree of uncertainty about whether AI can truly maintain the high level of visual spectacle audiences expect while simultaneously driving down costs.
“Is AI going to do that? I don’t know that,” Feige admitted, leaving the question open for future developments.
The Art of the Test Screening: Keeping it Real
Marvel has a well-established tradition of holding friends and family test screenings at the Burbank Disney lot. In light of the MCU’s recent string of less-than-stellar box office performances, the studio has been re-examining its creative process.
To gain broader feedback, Marvel began conducting screenings through National Research Group (NRG) recruitments. feige revealed that both the traditional Marvel screenings and the NRG-recruited ones have yielded similar results. The studio has long championed the secrecy and authenticity of its friends and family screenings, believing it helps maintain the integrity of the content.Feige remains a staunch advocate for testing, emphasizing its importance in refining the creative product. “That’s how you know when jokes work, when you’re not high on your own supply,” he stated, highlighting the value of external perspectives in the filmmaking process.
Marvel vs. DC: A Friendly Rivalry
The age-old “Coke vs. Pepsi” dynamic extends to the superhero genre, with Marvel and DC often pitted against each other. Though, feige expressed no animosity towards former MCU collaborator James Gunn, who is now spearheading the revitalization of DC Studios.
“I think James has had an influence on us, and we had one on him,” Feige said warmly, referencing Gunn’s success with Superman.”We texted. I was telling him how much I loved the movie. And he said ‘Wouldn’t exist without you guys.'” This exchange underscores a mutual respect and shared history between the two creative leaders.
A United Front in a Shifting Landscape
In an era where theatrical releases are increasingly influenced by the dominance of streaming, Feige stressed the importance of solidarity within the film industry.
“I think studios see every other studio as competition,” Feige observed. “Right now in our buisness, I root for every movie. I want every movie to succeed.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding that the health of the entire cinematic ecosystem benefits from the success of individual films, nonetheless of their studio affiliation.
