Kevin Smith Confirms Dogma Revival and Sequel Plans

Kevin Smith announced exciting news for Dogma fans at the Vulture Festival. The 1999 religious comedy will return with several planned releases and a sequel.

Dogma’s Journey to Release

Dogma faced challenges over the years due to ownership disputes among Disney, Miramax, and the Weinsteins. Smith made multiple offers to acquire the rights but received no response. He felt a deep personal connection to the film, which reflects his faith and his relationship with his Catholic parents. Smith refused to engage with Harvey Weinstein, wanting to distance himself from his involvement.

Recently, Weinstein’s company sold multiple films, including Dogma, to raise money for legal fees. This change allowed Smith to regain rights to Dogma, which he described as “getting my child back.”

Plans for a Sequel

With the rights restored, Smith is planning a Dogma sequel or companion film. He shared that ideas for the sequel have been developing during a drive from Vegas to L.A. Despite concerns from fans, he expressed enthusiasm to explore new directions for the story.

Both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are expected to appear in the sequel, as they owe much of their careers to Smith. He humorously recounted how he has held this over them for years, and confirmed they will play significant roles in the upcoming project.

Smith’s focus is on making Dogma relevant again while honoring its original spirit.
