Kevin Smith Confirms ‘Dogma’ Sequel with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Returning
Kevin Smith Announces Dogma Sequel
Director Kevin Smith confirmed he is making a sequel to his 1999 film Dogma. He shared this news at the Vulture Festival. Smith believes Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will return for this project.
Smith expressed enthusiasm about the sequel, saying he is “f–king tickled” and has found the right approach for it. He noted that the new film will be more of a companion piece than a traditional sequel.
He playfully stated that Affleck and Damon have owed him for their success in Good Will Hunting. Smith expects them to have significant roles, not just cameos, emphasizing their importance to the film.
The original Dogma featured stars like Alan Rickman, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Linda Fiorentino, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette. The film follows two banished angels who try to exploit a church loophole to return to Heaven. It sparked some controversy among religious groups but was largely successful with audiences.
Until recently, Dogma faced rights issues, causing it to be unavailable on streaming services and out-of-print on physical media. The rights, formerly owned by Harvey Weinstein and his brother, were sold this year to a new company, allowing Smith to move forward without sharing profits with Weinstein. Smith’s plans include a home release for the original film, a potential return to theaters for its 25th anniversary, and a tour.
For context, Matt Damon made a cameo as the angel Loki in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot in 2019.
Kevin Smith’s latest film, The 4:30 Movie, was released in September of this year.
