Key Changes to Buenos Aires Buses: Modernization and Safety Enhancements
After receiving control of 31 bus lines managed by the national government in September, the City of Buenos Aires plans seven key changes to modernize and improve bus operations.
Key Announcements:
-
Payment Methods: New payment options, including mobile apps and credit or debit cards, will be added for bus fares to enhance access and usage.
-
Bus Age Limit: Buses older than ten years will be removed from service starting in January. Companies will need to renew 241 buses, aiming for an average fleet age of 4.5 years to enhance travel experience.
-
Security Cameras: All buses will be equipped with security cameras connected to a monitoring center. This will facilitate quick responses to incidents. Implementation is expected within three months.
-
Smart Driving Systems: To improve safety and reduce traffic accidents, new buses will have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This technology uses sensors and artificial intelligence to identify risks.
-
Increased Driver Checks: There will be more alcohol and drug tests for drivers at the start of each bus line to ensure safety for passengers and pedestrians.
-
Electric Buses: An experimental project will introduce electric buses connecting various city locations. This service aims to begin in the first half of 2025 and will initially be free.
- Cultural Design Changes: Buses will be painted blue and feature artistic designs known as fileteado, while maintaining their traditional colors in the front. This aims to celebrate the city’s cultural heritage.
City authorities expect these upgrades to happen progressively over the next few weeks, with a six-month deadline for full implementation. They seek to create a more equitable transportation system, ensuring subsidies are based on passenger numbers instead of distance traveled.
