Keyshawn Davis Stripped of WBO Lightweight Title after Missing Weight
Keyshawn Davis’s reign as WBO lightweight champion ended abruptly after he failed to make weight for his scheduled fight against Edwin De Los Santos. Davis, a promising young fighter, weighed in at 139.3 pounds, exceeding the 135-pound limit by 4.3 pounds, resulting in him being stripped of the title.
De Los Santos, who weighed in at 134.7 pounds, remains eligible to win the vacant WBO lightweight title if he defeats Davis. Though, the fight’s continuation is uncertain.
Sampson Lewkowicz, De Los Santos’ promoter, expressed doubt about the fight proceeding. “We are still waiting for a negotiation,” Lewkowicz said. “In this moment, there is no fight. (Davis) is irresponsible. He’s a not professional.”
Davis’ promoter, Bob arum of Top Rank, also criticized Davis’s weight-cutting efforts. ”You can tell if a guy is trying to make weight and just can’t,” Arum said. “You can see that he’s dehydrated. That wasn’t the case with Keyshawn. He never really tried to make 135. That’s my view of what happened.”
Davis acknowledged his struggles with the lightweight division. “I outgrew the weight,” Davis said. “[I’ve] been making this weight for over four years now… I just outgrew the weight. It is what it is.” He added, ”I’m pretty sure he’ll still take the fight. The show must go on.”
What’s next
Negotiations are underway to determine if the fight between Davis and De Los Santos will proceed, with De Los Santos still having the possibility to claim the vacant WBO lightweight title.
