Keyshawn Davis has been stripped of his WBO lightweight title after missing weight before his scheduled defense against Edwin De Los Santos. The fight is still on for Saturday night at Scope Arena in Norfolk,Va.
Davis,26,weighed in at 139.3 pounds,exceeding the 135-pound limit by 4.3 pounds. He chose to relinquish the title rather than attempt to cut the additional weight.
“I outgrew the weight,” Davis said. He added that he had been trying to make the weight but his body had changed. Davis has a record of 13-0 with nine knockouts.
Only De Los Santos, 16-2 with 14 KOs, is now eligible to win the WBO title. This was to be Davis’s first title defense after he defeated Denys Berinchyk in February. Davis plans to compete in a new weight class after Saturday’s fight.
“The show must go on,” Davis stated, referring to his second performance in his hometown.
