Iran’s Khamenei Blames US, Israel for Syrian Regime Collapse
Tehran - Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali khamenei has accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating the downfall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. in a public address, Khamenei alleged a conspiracy between washington and Tel Aviv to remove Assad, a close ally of Tehran, from power.
“There is no doubt that what has happened in Syria is the result of a joint plan by America and the Zionists,” Khamenei declared, according to reports from Iran International and Press TV.
He further implicated an unnamed neighboring country in Assad’s ousting, stating, “Yes, a neighboring country of Syria has played a clear role in this, and continues to do so until now – this is clear to everyone – but the main conspirators, the main planners, and the central command center are in the US and the Zionist entity.”
This marks Khamenei’s first public comment as the Syrian regime’s collapse at the hands of rebels over the weekend.
While Khamenei did not explicitly name the “neighboring country” involved, his accusation is widely believed to target Turkey, which has provided support to various Syrian rebel groups now in control of the capital, Damascus.
Khamenei’s accusations come amidst a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Iran facing increasing pressure from the US and its allies. The fall of Assad, a key Iranian ally, represents a significant setback for Tehran’s regional influence.
