Khamenei Claims Victory Over Israel as ⁢Ceasefire⁣ Holds

Iran’s Supreme Leader‌ ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared victory over what he called the “fallacious⁤ Zionist ⁤regime” in ⁢a message posted on X. He asserted that the Israeli government was ⁢”practically knocked out” by Iran. This statement comes after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect Tuesday.

In his first ⁤public address‌ since the ceasefire, Khamenei suggested that Iran’s⁢ missiles had targeted a “large number of military and other targets” in Israel.Though, during the⁢ 12‌ days of missile launches, relatively few rockets ⁣bypassed ‌israel’s defenses. Twenty-eight people were killed, all civilians‌ struck in apartment buildings and cities.

Conversely, Israeli strikes in Iran ⁣reportedly killed ⁣at least 30‍ military commanders. President Trump stated that joint U.S.strikes “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear ⁣program. ⁣Human Rights Activists in Iran reported that the strikes killed at least 1,054 people, including 318 military personnel.

U.S.intelligence agencies indicated that Iran’s nuclear enrichment program was set back “years.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office echoed this, stating that their intelligence assessment ⁣showed a similar setback to Iran’s‍ nuclear program.

Khamenei claimed the U.S. joined Israel’s strikes to prevent ⁤Israel’s “total annihilation.”⁤ He‍ also downplayed ⁢the damage to Iranian nuclear facilities, saying Trump “overplayed the whole thing.” ⁤He‌ further‍ claimed Iran gave “the U.S. a big slap in the face” by attacking the Al-udeid Air base in Qatar, despite none of the missiles hitting the base.

Anxiety in Iran Fueling Claims of Victory?

Khamenei’s remarks, filled with rhetoric but lacking factual ‌basis, may be aimed at the Iranian population. The theocratic ⁣rulers maintain tight control over media, limiting‌ access to outside information.

Despite ⁣media control, younger Iranians⁤ are aware of the lack of freedoms, leading to protests ⁣that have ‍been suppressed.⁣ Netanyahu called for new anti-government protests, claiming the ayatollah⁣ is in his weakest position ‌ever. Khamenei⁤ has⁤ not been seen in public since ⁤the ceasefire.

While Israelis celebrated the return to normalcy, anxiety remains in Tehran. CBS News correspondent Imtiaz Tyab reported a palpable sense of‌ nervousness in ‍the Iranian capital,⁤ with most businesses remaining shut despite the truce. Tyab⁣ noted a ‍stark contrast to his visit five years prior, when Tehran was a vibrant metropolis.
