As the Lunar New Year approaches, healthcare officials in Khánh Hòa province, Vietnam, are proactively working to ensure adequate blood supplies for emergencies and routine medical care. Recent blood donation drives, spurred by the upcoming Tết holiday, have seen strong participation from citizens, officials, and organizations, but concerns remain about potential shortages.

A recent blood donation drive, held on February 10th, at the Cam Lam Commune Public Service Center, attracted 130 participants – officials, civil servants, and employees from various local organizations. The event yielded 114 units of blood, intended to meet the increased demand anticipated during the Lunar New Year of the Horse in 2026.

The commitment to voluntary blood donation is deeply ingrained in the community. Ms. Bui Xuan Thuy, a resident of Cam Lam Municipality, shared, “Here’s my third time donating blood. I understand that every drop of blood can save lives. That’s why I registered immediately when the local authorities launched the campaign.” This sentiment reflects a growing awareness of the critical role blood donation plays in supporting the healthcare system.

Further demonstrating this commitment, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, from Khánh Vinh Township, made his seventh blood donation on February 4th at the gymnasium of Khánh Vinh Township. He views donating blood as a yearly tradition, stating, “I know that at the end of the year, facilities often need more blood supplies for emergencies and treatments. That’s why, as soon as my work schedule allows, I donate blood immediately. I see this not only as my duty, but also as an opportunity to help patients who need blood.”

The province is actively promoting blood donation through multiple channels. Information regarding mobile blood drive schedules is available on the Khánh Hòa Provincial Red Cross website (hoichuthapdokhanhhoa.org.vn) and their fan page (hoichuthapdokhanhhoa). Fixed blood donation centers are also readily accessible, including the Khánh Hòa Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, located at 16 Hong Bang Street, Nha Trang District, which operates seven days a week. Ninh Thuan General Hospital also offers blood donation opportunities on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Despite ongoing efforts, officials acknowledge the potential for shortages. Statistics from the Khánh Hòa Blood Transfusion Center indicate that blood donations in December 2025 and January 2026 reached only approximately 50% of projected needs. This shortfall presents a significant challenge in ensuring sufficient blood reserves for the peak demand period surrounding Tết.

To proactively address this concern, the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee has implemented a comprehensive plan for the spring 2026 blood donation drive. Mr. Trinh Vinh Sang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross, explained that the committee is intensifying public awareness campaigns, coordinating numerous mobile blood donation events at universities, government offices, and companies, and maintaining close communication with medical institutions and blood donation centers to ensure a rapid response to any emergencies.

Blood donation drives are scheduled throughout February, with seven planned across the province, aiming to collect approximately 1,460 units of blood. Six institutions and organizations in the southern region are participating in efforts at Ninh Thuan General Hospital, with a target of collecting around 350 units. The Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation has issued a formal appeal to authorities, organizations, schools, officials, employees, students, and the general public, urging them to actively participate in the voluntary blood donation movement.

The Khánh Hòa Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center is also actively reaching out to institutions and organizations, encouraging them to facilitate blood donations at the center’s fixed location. The center’s emergency blood donation club, comprising 615 members, and platelet donation club, with over 500 members, stand ready to donate blood in urgent situations, further bolstering the province’s capacity to meet critical needs.

The ongoing efforts to secure blood supplies underscore the importance of community involvement in supporting the healthcare system, particularly during peak demand periods like the Lunar New Year. The dedication of volunteers and the proactive measures taken by provincial authorities are crucial in ensuring that patients receive the life-saving blood transfusions they require.
