India is setting its sights on becoming a developed nation by 2047, with ambitious plans for economic and infrastructural advancement. Union Minister of Housing & Urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar recently detailed the Modi government’s vision for achieving “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) over the next two decades, building upon progress in economic development and infrastructure.
Khattar emphasized the importance of boosting trade, industries, and living standards to drive economic growth. A key component of this vision involves significant expansion of the power sector, which he described as crucial for supporting all other sectors. According to khattar, peak power demand has nearly doubled since 2014, reaching 250 gigawatts in 2024-25 and projected to hit 270 gigawatts in 2025-26. This growth highlights the increasing energy needs of a rapidly developing nation.
In addition to infrastructure and economic goals, the government is also focusing on energy efficiency. Khattar announced a new initiative to standardize air conditioning temperatures, setting limits between 20°C and 28°C. This measure, a first-of-its-kind experiment, aims to promote energy conservation amid persisting heatwave conditions across the country.
“The Modi govt has completed 11 years, and with the targets set, we have 22 years left to achieve them. By 2047, we aim for a Viksit Bharat… Viksit Bharat means reaching a significant global stature,” Khattar said.
What’s next
The government plans to release further details on specific policies and initiatives designed to achieve its 2047 goals in the coming months. These plans will likely address key areas such as manufacturing, technology, and lasting development.
