Kick-Off in 2024: China Unveils Football as One of Its New Undergraduate Majors
China to Introduce 535 New Majors in 2024, Including Football and Cyberspace Security
China’s Ministry of Education has announced plans to introduce 535 new undergraduate majors in 2024, as part of its efforts to expand and diversify the country’s higher education offerings. The new majors, which include football and cyberspace security, are expected to be offered by 353 universities and colleges across the country.
The announcement was made in a public notice released by the Ministry of Education, which outlined the application materials for undergraduate majors at ordinary higher education institutions in 2024. According to the notice, a total of 176 majors were applied for in 2024, with the top five majors in terms of the number of applications being football, cyberspace security, sports training, health and medical insurance, and geriatric medicine and health.
The introduction of football as a major is seen as a significant development, given the country’s growing interest in the sport. Li Pan, dean of the Football School of Chengdu Sports University, noted that football is a sport that has received widespread public attention, and that the country is keen to expand the football population and improve the professional level of football professionals.
Li Pan emphasized the need to open up channels for football students to enter higher education, and to encourage more colleges and universities to accept football students. This, he believes, will help to address the concerns of parents who are hesitant to let their children pursue football as a career, and will ultimately lead to a larger and more talented pool of football players in the future.
The introduction of new majors such as football and cyberspace security is part of China’s broader efforts to develop a more diverse and specialized higher education system. The country is keen to produce graduates who are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to drive innovation and growth in key sectors, and to address the complex challenges facing society today.
The Chinese men’s national football team has faced challenges in recent years, including a 0-7 loss to Japan in an away game. However, the introduction of football as a major is seen as a positive step towards developing the sport and producing more talented players in the future.
