Kick the Habit for Good: 3 Science-Backed Strategies to Help You Quit Smoking Forever
Effective Smoking Cessation Methods Revealed in New Study
A recent study published in the journal Addiction has found that varenicline, cytisine, and nicotine e-cigarettes are the most effective smoking cessation methods. Smoking is a leading cause of death, responsible for over 480,000 fatalities in the United States each year.
The Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group (CTAG) at the University of Oxford in the UK conducted a comprehensive review of 14 studies related to tobacco addiction treatment between 2021 and 2023. The review evaluated the prevention and treatment of nicotine dependence through a systematic review.
According to the CTAG’s evaluation, varenicline, cytisine, and nicotine e-cigarettes were found to be the most effective for smoking cessation. Varenicline is an oral tablet that helps with smoking cessation, while cytisine is a plant-based oral tablet available with or without a prescription in Canada and Europe.
Both varenicline and cytisine work by binding to receptors that respond to nicotine, helping to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms and nicotine-generated reinforcement during smoking cessation. However, the certainty of the evidence that varenicline is more effective than bupropion or single-form nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for smoking cessation is high, but the certainty of the evidence that varenicline is more effective than dual NRT for smoking cessation is low.
The CTAG research team also reported that the combination of short-acting NRT gum, lozenges, sprays, and transdermal patches was more effective than NRT alone. Additionally, behavioral smoking cessation therapy was evaluated as a very effective smoking cessation method, as it can achieve smoking cessation effects for more than 6 months regardless of drug treatment.
Nicotine electronic cigarettes were found to have higher smoking cessation rates than NRT with high certainty evidence. The research team emphasized that it is most important to stop using combustible cigarettes, and that although nicotine is not completely harmless, the harmful effects of quitting smoking are greater due to other ingredients than nicotine.
Smoking cessation is a crucial step towards improving overall health and reducing the risk of smoking-related illnesses. With the help of effective smoking cessation methods, individuals can overcome nicotine addiction and live a healthier lifestyle.
