Taekwondo: Korea’s National Sport and Global Phenomenon
Introduction to Taekwondo
Taekwondo is the national sport of Korea and one of the most widely recognized martial arts globally. Its reputation has been solidified by going beyond its value as a traditional martial art and establishing itself as an international sport.
Taekwondo is not just a martial art, but a cultural asset of Korea and is loved by people all over the world as a global sport. In particular, since it was adopted as an official Olympic event, the international status of Taekwondo has been rising even higher.
History of Taekwondo
Taekwondo has developed over a long period of time. A form of martial art similar to the traditional Korean martial art of ‘Taekkyeon’ began during the Three Kingdoms period, and various martial arts were integrated thereafter to lay the foundation for modern Taekwondo.
In the 1940s and 1950s, various types of martial arts schools emerged and Taekwondo began to develop systematically. In 1959, the Korea Taekwondo Association was established, and in 1973, the World Taekwondo Federation was established, spreading Taekwondo around the world.
Globalization of Taekwondo
The globalization of Taekwondo has been rapid. The World Taekwondo Federation has 213 member countries around the world, and millions of people practice Taekwondo.
Taekwondo is not just a martial art of one country, but also plays a major role as a sport on the world stage. In addition, Taekwondo has formed a unique culture that emphasizes mental training and virtues such as self-control, patience, courtesy, and humility.
New World Taekwondo Federation Headquarters
The construction project of the World Taekwondo Federation Headquarters in Chuncheon recently passed the central investment review of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Chuncheon City said that it will sequentially carry out administrative procedures such as the approval of the shared property management plan by the council, planning and design services, and park development plans based on the results of the government’s central investment review.
The relocation of the World Taekwondo Federation Headquarters to Chuncheon is a significant event that symbolizes the future of Taekwondo, beyond the simple construction of a facility.
An important opportunity to help Korea maintain its status as the birthplace of Taekwondo and to promote more advanced Taekwondo to the world is blossoming in Chuncheon.
