Kicking Against the Odds: George Weah’s Historic Rise to Golden Ball Glory
The Ballon d’Or Award: A Rare Honor for African Footballers
The Ballon d’Or award, established in 1956, has been bestowed upon some of the greatest footballers of all time. However, only one African player has ever received this prestigious honor: George Weah, a former Liberian international who later became the president of his country.
Many talented African footballers, such as Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Mohamed Salah, and Rabah Madjar, have excelled in European football but have not won the Ballon d’Or. This is largely due to the intense competition for the award, with numerous football greats vying for the top spot.
A Rare Exception
In 1995, George Weah broke the mold by becoming the first and only African player to win the Ballon d’Or. This achievement marked a significant milestone in African football history.
Weah’s illustrious career spanned multiple teams, including Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, Marseille, and Al-Jazira of the Emirates. His impressive skills and accomplishments earned him the European Footballer of the Year award, beating out notable players like Alan Shearer, Luis Figo, Brazilian Ronaldo, Roberto Baggio, and Marcel Desailly.
Weah’s time at Paris Saint-Germain was particularly remarkable, as he helped the team secure a league title, two French Cup wins, and a League Cup victory. He was also the top scorer in the Champions League during the 1994-1995 season. Although Paris Saint-Germain lost to Milan in the semi-finals, Weah’s performance caught the attention of the Italian club.
In July 1995, Weah joined Milan, where he became a club legend, scoring 58 goals in 147 matches and winning two Italian league titles with the Rossoneri. The year 1995 was a pivotal moment for Weah and African football, as he claimed the Ballon d’Or for the first and only time.
