Kicking Back: Phil Jones Opens Up About the Dark Side of Football – His Heartbreaking Battle with Bullying
Phil Jones Opens Up About Emotional Pain and Abuse
Former Manchester United player Phil Jones has spoken out about the emotional pain and abuse he suffered due to critics and injuries throughout his career.
Jones, 32, revealed that he struggled to cope with the pain and mental anguish without the help of a psychiatrist.
The former England national team defender said he avoided public places, rarely went to restaurants, and kept a low profile to avoid attention.
However, the fans who abused him were unaware of the true impact of his 14-year injury battle.
Jones admitted that the pain in his right knee was devastating, and he needed regular painkillers to manage it.
“You get a lot of money, so you’re not allowed to have feelings or emotions. Physical injuries make me emotionally weak sometimes,” Jones said.
“I had a hard time going to restaurants for years. I kept my head down when I walked through the crowd. I didn’t want people to notice me,” he added.
Jones continued, “I’d pass people on the street, and they’d say something, and it would really bother me. You’d hear people whispering, ‘There’s a lot of hurt. This way you don’t have to take all this money.'”
“Of course, people will ask, ‘Does he always get infected?’ They think I wake up every day wishing I was infected,” Jones added, ”but my coping mechanism was to be quiet and watchful and protect my immediate family. And I didn’t communicate well with them. My friends.”
The Curse of Injuries and Pain
Jones suffered his first injury at 18 while playing for Blackburn, and although Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to United, it marked the beginning of his injury nightmare.
After surgery with Blackburn, Jones appeared to have recovered, but his knee was injured again, and a year after his move to Old Trafford, surgeons had to remove the meniscus.
Jones resisted and was eventually forced to play despite the bones rubbing against each other, affecting him physically and mentally.
Speaking on the “High Performance” podcast, Jones said, “I was wearing a compression wrap, and I was trying to get out of the pool. The inflammation was excruciating when I was passing the ball.
After years of seeing surgeons and specialists, Jones said he spent more time on the treatment table than on the field.
He deliberately started late attending physical therapy sessions to avoid his teammates who constantly asked him about the condition of his knees.
Due to his chronic injury absence, Jones became the subject of vicious abuse and ridicule both online and on the street.
Jones retired from football on 17 August, 12 months after being released by Manchester United.
Jones tried to restart his football career with an English Premier League club for the past few months but failed to find a new club, after which he decided to retire.
Phil Jones, who has a promising start to his career, moved to Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011.
The player was able to prove himself in his early days with the “Red Devils” that prompted the club’s fans to call him the new John Terry, but repeated injuries completely destroyed his career, since from 2019 to 2023 Jones only participated in the Premier League 6 times.
