Kicking It Up a Notch: China’s National Football Team Seeks Redemption After Crushing Defeat
China to Introduce 535 New University Majors, Including Football
Boosting Football Education to Enhance National Team Performance
The Chinese national football team’s recent performance has been underwhelming, sparking concerns about the country’s football development. In response, the Ministry of Education has announced plans to introduce 535 new university majors in 2024, including football, cyberspace security, and other fields.
According to the “Public Notice of Application Materials for Undergraduate Majors of Ordinary Higher Education Institutions in 2024,” the top five majors with the most applications in 2024 are football, cyberspace security, sports training, health and medical insurance, and geriatric medicine and health.
Li Pan, dean of the Football School of Chengdu Sports University, emphasized the importance of football education in China. “Football is a widely popular sport, and the country recognizes its significance in building a strong sports nation. However, China’s football level remains relatively low. We need to expand the football population and improve the professional level of football professionals.”
Li Pan also stressed the need to provide more opportunities for football students to pursue higher education. “We need to encourage more universities to accept football students and give children who are engaged in football training the chance to attend college. This will help alleviate parents’ concerns about their children playing football and increase the football population in the future.”
The Chinese men’s national football team recently suffered a 7-0 defeat against Japan in an away game, setting a record for the biggest score difference in the team’s international official matches. This loss, combined with a subsequent defeat against Saudi Arabia, has highlighted the need for improved football education and development in China.
