China Cracks Down on “Fake Gambling and Black” in Professional Football League
On September 10, the State Sports General Administration and the Ministry of Public Security jointly held a press conference in Dalian to address the special campaign to crack down on the “fake gambling and black” problems in the professional football league. Relevant officials from the State Sports General Administration’s Sports Competition Department, the Ministry of Public Security’s Public Security Bureau, and the Chinese Football Association attended the press conference to introduce the situation and answer questions from reporters.
The head of the Public Security Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security introduced the situation of the public security organs’ serious investigation and punishment of illegal crimes such as gambling and match-fixing in the football field in accordance with the law. Since 2022, the Ministry of Public Security has focused on assigning public security organs in Liaoning and other places to crack down on related gambling and match-fixing cases, and overall planning to crack down on illegal crimes such as online gambling, match manipulation, and bribery.
The public security organs have arrested 128 suspects of illegal crimes, eliminated 12 online gambling gangs, verified 120 suspected gambling and match-fixing matches, and taken criminal compulsory measures against 83 players, referees, coaches, and club managers involved in the case. At present, 44 football practitioners involved in the case have been sentenced by the court in accordance with the law, and 34 have been sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment or above in accordance with the law.
The person in charge of the Chinese Football Association introduced the disciplinary punishment of 61 football practitioners involved in the case. In accordance with the “Chinese Football Association Disciplinary Code” and after review by the Chinese Football Association Disciplinary Committee, 43 people were given a lifetime ban from engaging in any football-related activities in China; 17 people were banned from engaging in any football-related activities in China for five years; and one person was sentenced to a lifetime ban from engaging in any football-related activities in 2013.
The person in charge of the Sports Competition Department of the General Administration of Sport of China said that the problem of “fake gambling and black” seriously violates the spirit of sports, seriously undermines the order of the football industry, and seriously disappoints the expectations of the Party and the people. The General Administration of Sport of China will actively work with the Ministry of Public Security to seriously rectify the problem of “fake gambling and black” in the professional football league and resolutely stop the rampant trend of “fake gambling and black”.
In the next step, the General Administration of Sport of China will continue to deepen the cooperation mechanism with the public security organs and improve the effectiveness of the joint rectification of the problem of “fake gambling and black” in football. At the same time, it will further strengthen the party building work in the football industry, strengthen ideological and political education, improve the industry supervision mechanism, promote the construction of football culture, and create a good environment for the healthy development of the football industry.
