Understanding Breast Cancer in Ireland
Each year, approximately 3,600 women and around 30 men in Ireland receive a breast cancer diagnosis. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment and improved outcomes. The Irish cancer Society is actively promoting breast awareness and fundraising for vital support services and research.
The Importance of breast Awareness and Early Detection
Being “breast aware” means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel. Regular self-checks, combined wiht routine screenings, can help identify changes that may indicate breast cancer. If you notice any persistent changes, it’s essential to consult your General practitioner (GP) promptly.
Many women feel hesitant or embarrassed to discuss breast issues with their doctor, but this examination could be life-saving. Your GP will conduct a breast exam and, if necessary, refer you for further assessment.
Common signs and symptoms to watch for include:
- A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area.
- Changes in the size, shape,or texture of the breast.
- Nipple discharge (other than breast milk).
- Inverted nipple.
- Changes in the skin of the breast, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering.
- Pain in the breast that doesn’t go away.
