Killarney councillors have approved amended plans for a new 139-space car park at Green Lawn,following a special meeting of the Killarney Municipal District. The decision comes after a previous vote was deferred last month due to a stalemate, highlighting the notable debate surrounding the project.

The approved development aims to alleviate parking pressures within Killarney town center.the car park will operate under a 15-year lease agreement with Kerry County council. However, the path to approval wasn’t without its challenges, with councillors carefully considering potential impacts on local residents and pedestrian access.
Director of Roads, Frank Hartnett, presented a comprehensive recap of the CEO’s report, outlining the project’s viability and the implications of proposed amendments. Discussions focused on balancing the need for increased parking with the preservation of local amenity and resident quality of life.
Key Amendments and Voting Outcomes
Several key amendments were made to the original proposal following feedback from elected representatives and public consideration.
The most significant change involved the removal of vehicular access onto Mission Road, passing with a vote of four to three. Councillors Marie Moloney, Brendan Cronin, Niall Kelleher, and Maura Healy-Rae supported the removal, while Martin Grady, niall “Botty” O’Callaghan, and John O’Donoghue opposed it.
The final approval was subject to three conditions:
Resident Agreement on Fencing: Fencing will be erected at the rear of properties on Pond Lane, contingent upon the agreement of the majority of residents. Additional fencing will also be installed along the boundary of Green Lane.
Parking-Only Restriction: The car park will be strictly limited to parking purposes, prohibiting any other events or activities.
* Pedestrian Access Modification: Pedestrian access from the car park onto Green Lane will be removed.
the final vote saw councillors niall Kelleher, Maura healy-Rae, Marie Moloney, and Brendan Cronin voting in favour of the amended plans. Councillors Niall “Botty” O’callaghan, John O’Donoghue, and Killarney MD Chairman Martin Grady voted against.
