Kim Gordon’s “Bye Bye 25!” a Musical Jab at Donald Trump
Updated June 14, 2025
Kim Gordon, known for her role in Sonic Youth, has released “Bye Bye 25!,” a reworked version of her song “Bye Bye” from the 2024 album, “The Collective.” This new rendition takes aim at Donald Trump by incorporating words that he seems to avoid, effectively using music as a form of political commentary and artistic expression.
The lyrics of “Bye Bye 25!” feature terms like “intersex,” “Gulf of Mexico,” “climate change,” and “women.” Gordon also created a video in the style of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” displaying these words on cue cards amidst protest footage. The song and video serve as a pointed critique of what Gordon sees as Trump’s attempt to stifle certain topics and ideas.
Gordon collaborated with producer Justin Raisen to create the track. She said the idea came from a list of words that the Trump administration has essentially banned from research proposals. “I guess Trump does believe in cancel culture, because he is literally trying to cancel culture,” Gordon said.
Proceeds from “Bye Bye 25!” and an accompanying T-shirt featuring the same list of words will be donated to Noise for Now, an association supporting reproductive rights. This aligns the project with a cause Gordon supports, adding another layer of purpose to the artistic statement.
What’s next
With “Bye Bye 25!,” Gordon hopes to raise awareness and funds for reproductive rights while also challenging what she views as censorship. The song’s release coincides with protests planned for Trump’s birthday, possibly amplifying its message.
