Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Named Head of North Korea’s Nuclear Program

Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Named Head of North Korea’s Nuclear Program

February 26, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has elevated his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, to a key leadership position within the country’s nuclear and missile programs, according to reports from South Korean intelligence. The move signals a potential succession plan within the isolated state, though the full implications remain unclear.

South Korean media reported on Monday, February 24, 2026, that Kim Ju Ae has been assigned the role of “missile general director” within the “Missile Administration,” the body responsible for overseeing North Korea’s nuclear forces. This assessment comes from intelligence gathered by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) during the ongoing Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party.

While Jang Chang-ha is officially listed as the director of the administration, intelligence suggests Kim Ju Ae is actively involved in the decision-making process, receiving briefings from generals and issuing directives. This marks a significant escalation in her public profile and apparent authority within the regime.

Kim Ju Ae is believed to be between 12 and 14 years old. Her first confirmed public appearance was in November 2022, accompanying her father at the launch of the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Since then, she has been increasingly visible at high-profile military events, including intercontinental ballistic missile launches and weapons inspections.

The NIS has indicated that her increased public presence suggests she is being groomed as a potential successor to her father. According to the Associated Press, the intelligence service has observed instances where she offers opinions on policy matters. This assessment builds on earlier observations of her growing role in state affairs.

North Korean state media initially described Kim Ju Ae as Kim Jong Un’s “beloved child” and “precious daughter.” More recently, however, state media has begun referring to her as “respected,” a term typically reserved for the most honored members of North Korean society, including Kim Jong Un himself. This shift in terminology is seen as a deliberate effort to elevate her status and legitimacy within the country.

The name “Ju Ae” was first brought to international attention by American basketball player Dennis Rodman after his visit to North Korea in 2013, though it has not been officially verified by either the North Korean government or South Korean intelligence. North Korean defectors interviewed by South Korean intelligence have suggested alternative names for her, including Un Ju and Ju Ye.

Kim Ju Ae made her first public appearance abroad at the 2025 China Victory Day Parade in Beijing, further demonstrating her growing prominence on the international stage. This appearance signaled a willingness by North Korea to showcase her to the world and potentially signal her future role.

The implications of this appointment are significant. North Korea’s nuclear program remains a major source of international concern, and the involvement of Kim Ju Ae in its oversight suggests a continuity of policy, even with a potential change in leadership. The move also raises questions about the future stability of the regime and the potential for further provocations.

Analysts are divided on whether Kim Ju Ae is the sole designated successor. Some believe her public appearances and increasing responsibilities are clear indicators of her being groomed for leadership, while others suggest that other potential successors may also be under consideration. The opaque nature of North Korean politics makes it difficult to assess the situation with certainty.

The elevation of a teenage girl to such a sensitive and powerful position is unprecedented. It reflects the unique dynastic nature of the North Korean regime, where power is concentrated within the Kim family. This move also underscores the importance of maintaining a close watch on developments within North Korea and understanding the evolving dynamics of its leadership structure.

The international community will be closely monitoring Kim Ju Ae’s future activities and pronouncements for any indication of her policy preferences and her vision for North Korea. The coming months and years will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the country and its relationship with the rest of the world.
