Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor faced a £1.8m repair bill to cover restoration costs at his former Royal Lodge home in Windsor after his lease officially ended, according to reporting by the BBC and The Guardian. King Charles used his personal wealth to cover a net amount of £1.5m owed to the Crown Estate after offsetting £302,000 in lease-surrender compensation.

Lease Surrender and Repair Costs at Royal Lodge

The former Duke of York originally secured the 98-acre Windsor estate under a 75-year lease signed in 2003, making upfront payments that included approximately £7.5m for repairs in lieu of paying monthly rent, the BBC reported. Under the lease conditions, surrendering the property within the first 25 years entitled him to financial compensation that decreased annually. Leaving in October 2026 would have meant Mountbatten-Windsor was entitled to receive £302,000 from the Crown Estate, as noted by the BBC and The Guardian.

That compensation was offset by a dilapidations bill totaling £1.8m for repairs across the entire estate, which encompasses several properties, gardens, and outbuildings, The Guardian reported. The net payment required to settle the account with the Crown Estate amounted to £1.5m. The Crown Estate stated that the property’s early return allows them to pursue future opportunities to generate financial value for the nation.

The lease for Royal Lodge has ended and our focus now is firmly on its future use and the opportunities to generate additional financial value for the nation from its early return.

King Charles Uses Private Income for Crown Estate Balance

King Charles utilized his own private income to pay the £1.5m balance to the Crown Estate so that the landlord would not be left out of pocket, the BBC reported.

The Guardian reported that a palace source clarified that an undisclosed annual stipend provided to Mountbatten-Windsor from the King’s private funds must not be used to cover legal costs stemming from his judicial review.

High Court Finds Police Used Wrong Search Warrant Provisions

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office following revelations regarding his connections to the US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to BBC reporting. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. Concurrently, police searched his residences at the Royal Lodge and the Sandringham estate, where he relocated earlier in the year.

Future Plans for the Windsor Property

The Crown Estate announced that the 30-room Windsor mansion will be marketed by two nationally recognized agents to deliver a commercial return, with no current plans to install another royal occupant, according to the BBC and The Guardian. A National Audit Office report released earlier in the year revealed that Mountbatten-Windsor had sublet cottages on the Royal Lodge estate for an undisclosed income, while his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, occupied unpriced palace accommodations funded privately by the King.
