Prague-based Warhorse Studios, the team behind the critically acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its recently released sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, is setting its sights on becoming a leading force in the role-playing game genre. The studio is already planning its next project, even as it continues to support Kingdom Come: Deliverance II with downloadable content.
Communications director Tobi Stolz-Zwilling articulated the studio’s ambition during a preview event for the Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. We, at Warhorse Studios, absolutely feel at home in the RPG genre. We want to establish ourselves as the new kings of RPG,
Stolz-Zwilling stated. This declaration signals a clear intent to build upon the success of their immersive, historically-grounded RPGs and compete with established giants like Larian Studios (Baldur’s Gate 3), Bethesda (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout), and CD Projekt Red (The Witcher).
The studio’s growth is substantial. During the development of the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Warhorse employed around 100 people. That number has more than doubled, reaching 250 employees currently, with plans to expand to 300. According to Stolz-Zwilling, the majority of the current team is focused on add-ons for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. However, the expansion to 300 employees will allow the studio to simultaneously develop new content for the sequel and begin pre-production on a brand new RPG.
The timing of this expansion and new project announcement comes after a successful launch for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Released in 2025, the game has been a major success, placing it in contention for Game of the Year awards alongside titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Hollow Knight: Silksong. The success of the sequel has clearly bolstered the studio’s confidence and provided a foundation for future growth.
Warhorse Studios intends to maintain its core design philosophy. Stolz-Zwilling emphasized that their next project will continue the trend of deep and cinematic RPGs
. This suggests a continued focus on immersive storytelling, realistic settings, and complex character interactions – hallmarks of the Kingdom Come series. The studio believes it has its own formula here, and that we define them in a specific way
, and intends to continue refining that approach.
While the studio is focused on RPGs, they have explicitly stated they have no plans to remaster the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Studio head Daniel Vávra has also expressed a personal interest in developing a Viking-themed game, though it remains unclear if this will be the studio’s next project after the currently planned RPG.
The studio’s evolution is also reflected in its internal structure. A recent interview with Japanese outlet GameSpark, featuring Stolz-Zwilling, narrative designer Vladimir Mareček, and concept artist Hisami Kawatani, highlighted the studio’s growth and its commitment to ambitious creative ideas. The studio is also exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to accelerate development, as noted by Vávra in April 2025.
The commitment to immersive RPGs is a strategic one. The success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II has demonstrated the appetite for a more grounded and realistic approach to the genre. By doubling down on this formula, Warhorse Studios hopes to carve out a unique space for itself in a crowded market and establish itself as a major player in the RPG landscape. The studio’s ambition is clear: to not just create good RPGs, but to become the new kings of RPG
.
As of , Warhorse Studios is actively expanding its team and preparing to enter pre-production on its next RPG, while continuing to support Kingdom Come: Deliverance II with ongoing DLC. The studio’s future appears firmly rooted in the immersive RPG genre, and its trajectory suggests a continued commitment to delivering ambitious and cinematic gaming experiences.
