Council to Complete Work on Cycle Routes Started in the Summer

Locals support changes approved as part of the ‘Healthy Streets’ initiative by London authorities. This program aims to provide safer options for traveling compared to driving.

Recent updates to Kingston cycle lanes have been welcomed. Matt Stephen, a volunteer with Kingston Cycling Campaign (KCC), helped develop the Kingston to New Malden cycleway. He finds the current cycling infrastructure inadequate for cyclist safety.

Stephen noted that injuries occur when cyclists share roads with motor vehicles. A gap in the route creates a mix of cyclists, buses, and lorries. His hope is for a protected cycling space that separates cyclists from cars.

Recent improvements include new zebra crossings and clear pedestrian priority at side roads. The Cycle Routes program, funded by Transport for London (TfL), is a £32 million project to enhance traffic flow and make London streets more eco-friendly. Local residents believe this will reduce road traffic and improve pedestrian experiences.

Stuart Newton, a resident of New Malden, stated that increasing cycling would benefit everyone by freeing up road space. Simon Clarke expressed optimism for the timely implementation of the new updates.

The KCC also highlighted environmental benefits. Stephen emphasized that cycling for short trips reduces air and noise pollution and improves public health.

While encouraging higher quality cycleways, the KCC voiced concerns about shared spaces with buses, taxis, and pedestrians. Stephen urged the council to collaborate with TfL to improve safety and quality for cyclists traveling between New Malden and Kingston.

The council approved these plans as part of the Mayor of London’s transport strategy for 2041 in early 2024.
