George kirby delivered a stellar performance Sunday, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels and snapping their five-game losing streak. Kirby, the Mariners’ ace, achieved a career-high 14 strikeouts while allowing just two runs on two hits over seven innings.
Manager Dan Wilson praised Kirby’s exceptional command and quality strikes, noting it was one of the best performances he had witnessed. The Mariners needed a strong start, and Kirby delivered, setting a positive tone for the team as they head to Arizona for their next series.
Kirby’s outing marked a significant turnaround after a challenging start to the season, which was delayed due to a shoulder injury. Despite losing his previous three starts and even taking a line drive off his face in a game against Baltimore, Kirby showcased the form that earned him an All-Star selection in 2023.His ERA dropped from 8.56 to 6.53.
the only blemish on Kirby’s record came in the fourth inning when Mike Trout singled and Taylor Ward followed with a two-run homer. Though, Kirby quickly regained his composure, finishing the game with three consecutive scoreless innings, including striking out both Trout and Ward in the seventh.
“We needed a big one today, and hopefully this sets the tone for us,” Kirby said. “hopefully we keep rolling.it’s always good when you go out there and give your team the best chance to win after a couple of losses.”
Andres munoz also found his footing, securing the save by striking out Trout with a runner on first to end the game. Munoz had been struggling, having blown back-to-back save opportunities.
“It’s probably one of the most important starts we’ve had, with the way our pitching is going and George being able to come out and put on really the performance of his career,” catcher Mitch Garver said.
What’s next
The Mariners hope that Kirby’s dominant performance and Munoz’s accomplished save will carry over as they head to Arizona for a three-game series, aiming to build on this momentum and improve their standing in the league.
