Kirkland & Ellis Expands Footprint with New Nashville Office

Kirkland & Ellis, the largest U.S. Law firm by revenue, announced today the opening of a new office in Nashville, Tennessee. The expansion reflects a growing trend of major firms and businesses establishing a presence in the city, drawn by its vibrant legal community and growing talent pool.

The Nashville office will initially house four litigation partners – Tara Blake, Matt Smith, Paul Rosenblatt, and Travis Swearingen – along with additional associates. Their collective experience encompasses a broad range of litigation, including trial work, class actions, product liability, mass torts, and large commercial disputes. Firm leaders also indicated plans to expand into corporate and transactional matters as client demand dictates.

“Nashville offers an ideal environment for our continued growth by enhancing our ability to attract exceptional legal talent in a vibrant and growing city with talented lawyers and a strong law school community,” said Jon A. Ballis, chair of the firm’s executive committee, in a statement. The firm views Nashville as a strategic location to serve clients across multiple states, leveraging its nationwide platform for complex cases and high-profile corporate matters.

The move comes as Kirkland & Ellis continues a nationwide expansion, particularly focused on bolstering its litigation and transactional practices. The firm, based in Chicago, is currently the largest in the U.S. By revenue, and its decision to invest in Nashville underscores the city’s increasing prominence as a legal hub.

This expansion isn’t happening in isolation. Minneapolis is also gaining attention as an emerging hub for major law firm expansion, according to recent reports. While Minneapolis already has a number of prominent firms, it remains relatively unsaturated compared to other major legal markets. Firms like Cozen O’Connor have recently entered the Minneapolis market, demonstrating a broader trend of firms looking beyond traditional coastal hubs for growth opportunities.

The appeal of cities like Nashville and Minneapolis extends beyond simply finding new markets. These locations offer a compelling combination of economic stability, a favorable business climate, and a high quality of life, making them attractive destinations for legal professionals. The availability of talent from local law schools is also a significant factor, as firms seek to build strong teams with deep roots in the community.

Kirkland & Ellis’s Nashville office is expected to operate as an integrated part of the firm’s national network, providing support on complex legal challenges and high-stakes corporate transactions. The firm has not yet announced a specific location for the office within Nashville.

The launch of the Nashville office was also highlighted on social media, with a post on Instagram stating the firm is “excited to expand with a new office in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of our continued strategy to attract top legal talent and meet growing client demand.” The post directed followers to a press release for further details.
