Chagas Disease: What to Know About the “Kissing Bug” Illness
Table of Contents
Millions worldwide are estimated to have Chagas disease, a potentially fatal parasitic illness that can remain dormant for years.
Approximately 280,000 peopel in the U.S. are affected, according to the blank”>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). while not officially considered endemic in the U.S. (unlike 21 other countries in the Americas), public health experts argue in a article” target=”_blank”>report published in the CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases journal that it should be. The experts cite increasing evidence of the parasite and the presence of “kissing bugs” in 32 states.
The report acknowledges data limitations regarding increasing bug populations but notes increased human encounters and research attention. Experts argue that labeling the U.S. as non-endemic leads to low awareness and underreporting.
How do you get Chagas disease?
Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Transmission occurs primarily through the bite of the triatomine bug (“kissing bug”). the bug becomes infected by feeding on an infected animal.
Kissing bugs typically bite people while they sleep, defecating afterward. The parasite enters the body through the eyes, mouth, or open wounds in the feces.
Other, less common, transmission routes include:
- Eating uncooked food contaminated with infected bug feces
- Receiving infected donor blood or organs
- Exposure to infected wild animals
Symptoms of Chagas Disease
Symptoms are often mild or absent in the early (acute) phase. When present, they can include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
- Swelling at the bite site
However, the disease can progress to a chronic phase years later, causing serious heart and digestive problems. The chronic phase is often asymptomatic for decades.
Geographic distribution & Kissing Bug Species
While historically concentrated in Latin America, kissing bugs and Chagas disease are increasingly found in the Southern United States. Here’s a table of common kissing bug species and their distribution:
| Kissing bug Species | Commonly Found In | Primary Host animals |
|---|---|---|
| Triatoma sanguisuga | Southern US (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana) | Raccoons, opossums, rodents |
| triatoma gerstaeckeri | Southwestern US (Arizona, New mexico, California) | Rodents, pack rats |
| Triatoma infestans | Historically South America, rare in US | Various mammals |
Significant Note: Finding a kissing bug does not automatically mean infection. Testing is required to determine if the bug carries the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite.
