For Pierre Nixon, the allure of the Gold Coast was its promise of sun-kissed beaches adn a relaxed lifestyle. Now, he’s witnessing the coastline erode as Tropical Cyclone Alfred makes its presence felt.

⁢”We came here for the gorgeous‍ weather,⁢ but right now, it’s gray, dark, and kind of scary,” he stated, encapsulating the sentiment of many residents facing the storm’s impact.

Pierre and his flatmates, originally from New Zealand, have spent the last day preparing for‌ the ⁢worst. They secured outdoor furniture, filled bathtubs as a precaution against water outages, and ‌stocked up on essential supplies before shops‍ closed.

Now, all they can do ‌is⁢ wait and see what unfolds.

“Last ⁣night, we sat down, had a drink, and just ‌watched the madness outside,” Pierre recounted. ⁤”The wind was blowing in two different directions. ‌The rain was coming sideways. I’ve⁢ never seen waves this big in my life.”

Across southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales, the cyclone is uprooting trees, causing power outages, and washing away beaches.

Over 40,000⁤ homes are ⁤without power, affecting areas from the Gold Coast to Brisbane’s bayside and ⁤northern NSW.

Storm ⁤surges and massive swells exceeding​ 10 meters have been recorded, leading to significant beach erosion and infrastructure damage.

Winds reaching up to 120km/h are battering the coast,⁢ with trees ⁤falling onto homes and roads, and heavy rainfall causing widespread flooding.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli acknowledged the escalating damage.

For Pierre and his flatmates, Cyclone Alfred is their first experience with such a ⁢severe storm, and they were unprepared for its intensity.

“I was pretty nonchalant about⁤ it at first,” Pierre admitted. “I didn’t think it would be a big deal. Now, I’m wondering if our street will flood, if trees will come down, if we’ll be stuck without power for days.”

Their Australian neighbors have offered support ‌and guidance.

“They’ve been through it all before, so they’ve⁣ been giving us advice, telling us to​ bring everything inside, move our ⁢cars to higher ground,” he explained.

Pierre’s parents, Jo and Paul Nixon-Sparkes, ⁢are also caught in the storm, their ⁤long-awaited holiday turning into‍ an unexpected‍ ordeal.

Despite the circumstances, Pierre says they are maintaining a sense of humor.

“They haven’t been overseas ⁣in‌ 10 years, ‍and this was supposed to be their dream holiday,” he said. “Now they’re stuck in a cyclone. We had a concert lined up‌ on Wednesday⁣ night, but we‍ couldn’t even go.”

With power outages becoming more‍ widespread, Pierre is ready to offer his home as a refuge.

“They can have my bed, I’ll take the couch,”​ he ⁣said. “We’ll figure‍ it out. We’re Kiwis and we look after each other.”

The Cyclone Alfred Threat Remains

Cyclone Alfred continues to impact the coast, and authorities warn that the worst conditions may⁤ persist throughout the weekend.

Prime Minister ‍Anthony Albanese has urged residents to remain ​indoors and prepare for potentially worsening ‌conditions.

Currently, Cyclone Alfred is situated approximately 245 kilometers offshore ‌from Brisbane, or 225km east-north-east of the Gold Coast, moving west⁤ at 10km per hour.

For Pierre and his flatmates, the ⁤focus is on‌ weathering the storm ‍and hoping for the best.

“This whole‍ thing reminds me of Covid—when peopel rushed to the supermarkets, when there was this weird tension in the air,” he reflected.

“The only‌ difference is, we know this is only supposed ‌to last two days. But honestly, who knows?”
