CLOPPENBURG,Germany — In the heart of Cloppenburg,a unique holiday home called “Kjells Wunderland” provides rent-free,week-long stays for families with children requiring specialized care. The villa was established by Michelle Gerdes Lamp and her husband, Christian, who understand the challenges firsthand, having lost their son to cancer.
The couple’s nine-year-old son, Kjell, died from a brain tumor nearly three years ago, just 11 months after his diagnosis. During that challenging time, they built a strong support network and, in 2023, founded the association “kjells Wunderland” to extend that support to other families facing similar circumstances. The institution assists families in finding appropriate medical facilities and navigating complex submission processes.
A Sanctuary, Not a Clinic
The Lamps envisioned a place where families could escape the clinical habitat and find peace. Their dream became a reality when an elderly couple donated their house to the st. Antonius Foundation Emstek, which now leases the property to the association.
The villa boasts over 300 square meters of living space and a large garden. Donations to the association cover rent and additional expenses, allowing families to stay free of charge.
Remembering Kjell
For the Lamps, the house is filled with memories of Kjell. “We actually have something in every room that reminds us of our late son,” christian Lampe said. A small stuffed dog sits on a windowsill, reminiscent of Kjell’s constant companion. Hedgehog-themed items are scattered throughout the house, a nod to Kjell’s time in the “hedgehog class.” Star Wars memorabilia also reflects his interests.
“The guests won’t even notice these things,” Michelle Gerdes Lamp said. “But they have a meaning for us.”
