The February 21, 2026, date at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, witnessed a historic achievement in cross-country skiing. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo of Norway secured his sixth gold medal, surpassing the previous record of five held by American speed skater Eric Heiden since the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid.

Klæbo’s remarkable performance culminated in a victory in the men’s 50-kilometer classical race, a grueling test of endurance and skill. He completed the race in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 4 seconds. This win followed his earlier successes at the Games in the skiathlon, men’s 10km freestyle, individual sprint, team sprint, and the 4×7.5km relay, solidifying his dominance across multiple disciplines.

The podium was swept by Norwegian skiers, with Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget taking silver and Emil Iversen claiming bronze. The trio led for the vast majority of the race, with Nyenget initially setting a fast pace. Klæbo ultimately made the decisive move with five kilometers remaining, first distancing himself from Iversen and then overtaking Nyenget on the final climb.

The race itself was a strategic battle of endurance. Nyenget initially took the lead, establishing an 8.4-second advantage over Klæbo after 1.3 kilometers. However, Klæbo steadily closed the gap. The demanding pace led to early retirements from competitors, including Finland’s Iivo Niskanen and Norway’s Harald Østberg Amundsen.

By the halfway point, the Norwegians – Klæbo, Nyenget, and Iversen – held a significant lead, nearly 40 seconds ahead of their closest competitor, Saveliy Korostelyov of the Athlete Refugee Team. The race ultimately became a showcase of Norwegian strength, with the team securing a complete sweep of the medals.

Czech athletes also participated in the event. Mike Ophoff finished 21st with a time 10 minutes and 38.8 seconds behind Klæbo, while Matyáš Bauer finished 28th, 13 minutes and 59 seconds behind the winner. Michal Novák did not finish the race, citing gastrointestinal issues that impacted his ability to breathe and perform at a competitive level.

Novák explained that the course conditions, with fresh snow and fluctuating temperatures, also played a role in the race’s difficulty. He noted that the early pace was particularly challenging, and his body was unable to respond effectively.

Klæbo’s achievement places him among the most decorated Winter Olympians of all time. With 11 Olympic medals he trails only swimmer Michael Phelps (23) in total Olympic gold medals. He has also secured five overall World Cup titles and ten discipline titles, further cementing his legacy as a dominant force in cross-country skiing.

This victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics underscores Klæbo’s exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. His ability to consistently perform at the highest level, across a range of events, has earned him widespread recognition and admiration within the athletic community and beyond.
