Clear is piloting a new card that functions like a debit card but can switch to a buy now, pay later (BNPL) mode. This extends the BNPL model beyond online shopping to in-store purchases.
the Clear Card, unveiled at Money20/20 Europe, utilizes Visa’s Flexible Credential network, allowing a single card to access multiple funding sources. Clear said the card, issued by WebBank and FDIC-insured, enables users in the U.S. to pay with stored cash or use Clear’s Pay in 4 plans at any Visa-accepting merchant.
A broader launch in the U.S. and Europe is expected later this year, with over 5 million consumers already on the waitlist.
Visa’s Flexible Credential operates behind the scenes, letting consumers choose between immediate debit payments and clear’s installment plans. Future card versions may include cash back and merchant discounts.
