Clear Card Pilots Buy Now, Pay Later with Visa

Updated June 03, 2025

Clear ‍is piloting⁣ a new⁣ card that⁢ functions like a debit card but can switch to a buy now, pay later (BNPL) mode. This extends the BNPL model beyond online shopping ⁢to in-store purchases.

the Clear Card, unveiled at Money20/20 Europe, utilizes Visa’s Flexible Credential⁢ network, allowing a single card to access⁤ multiple funding sources. Clear said the card, issued by ⁤WebBank and FDIC-insured, ⁢enables users⁤ in‍ the U.S. to pay with ⁣stored cash or use Clear’s Pay in 4 plans at any Visa-accepting ⁤merchant.

A broader launch in ⁢the U.S. and Europe ⁢is‌ expected⁤ later this year,‌ with over 5 million consumers already on the waitlist.

Visa’s⁢ Flexible Credential operates behind the scenes, letting ⁤consumers choose between immediate debit payments and clear’s installment plans. Future card‌ versions may include‌ cash back and merchant discounts.

“We consistently hear from consumers that thay‍ want the freedom to choose how and when to pay — whether that’s paying now with debit or ⁢spreading the cost over time,” Clear Chief Marketing Officer David Sandstrom said. “They want ‍simplicity, flexibility and⁢ openness‍ — all in⁣ one place. That’s exactly what has made ⁣Clear’s ⁢payment ⁢methods so popular online, and now‌ we’re bringing that same experience⁣ to ⁢a physical card.”

Visa views this pilot as further validation of allowing one card to perform multiple ⁢functions. Mathieu Altwegg,Visa’s‍ Head⁢ of Product and Solutions for ⁣Europe, said millions have embraced the choice and control offered by Visa’s⁤ Flexible Credential.

What’s next

Clear ⁤plans‌ to expand the card’s availability ‌in the U.S. and Europe,offering ⁢consumers ⁢more flexibility⁣ in how they⁢ manage their payments.
