Klarna, the Swedish fintech company specializing in “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) services, has expanded its reach in the United Kingdom through a new partnership with Google Pay. Monday’s announcement makes Klarna’s interest-free payment options available to Google Pay users across the U.K., offering consumers greater flexibility at checkout.

The integration allows users to access Klarna’s “pay-in-3” installment plan directly within the Google Pay interface. This enables them to split purchases into three equal, interest-free payments, and manage their purchases, returns, and repayments through the Klarna app. Raji Behal, Head of Western and Southern Europe, U.K. & Ireland at Klarna, emphasized the significance of the move, stating, “This is a big moment for us and a major step towards our goal of being available at every checkout, everywhere.”

Google Pay’s Director of Product Management, Lisa Yokoyama, highlighted the collaborative aspect of the partnership. “Expanding our collaboration with Klarna to the U.K. Underscores our goal to empower more people with the flexibility to pay how they choose,” she said. Yokoyama also pointed to the scale of Google’s shopping platform, noting that “With people shopping on Google over a billion times a day, this broader footprint provides even more checkout options to help businesses drive tangible growth.”

The launch comes at a pivotal time for the BNPL sector in the U.K. Just days prior, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) unveiled new consumer protections for BNPL services. These regulations require lenders, including Klarna, to obtain FCA authorization and conduct thorough affordability checks before offering BNPL options to customers. The aim is to prevent consumers from taking on debt they cannot reasonably repay.

Sarah Pritchard, Deputy Chief Executive of the FCA, explained the rationale behind the new guidelines. “We want the buy now, pay later sector to thrive,” she stated. “It provides an important source of credit to many, and we will continue to support firms who want to develop innovative new products. But crucially, no one should be lent to if they’re unable to repay because that could worsen their financial situation. Now parliament has given us the powers, we’re putting in place proportionate protections for the 11 million people who use it.”

The regulatory scrutiny reflects a broader shift in the perception and usage of BNPL services. Initially marketed as a convenient alternative for smaller purchases like sneakers and sofas, BNPL is increasingly being used to finance essential and recurring expenses, such as utility bills and subscription renewals. This trend, as highlighted by PYMNTS Intelligence research, carries potential financial risks for consumers.

PYMNTS Intelligence found that consumers applying BNPL to essential expenses are more likely to incur interest charges than those using it for discretionary purchases. This is attributed to the higher frequency of these transactions and their role in bridging the gap between paychecks. The research suggests that for many households, BNPL is evolving from a tool for indulgence to a means of managing day-to-day financial stability.

The partnership between Klarna and Google Pay represents a strategic move for both companies. For Klarna, it expands its reach to a wider audience of Google Pay users, solidifying its position in the competitive BNPL market. For Google Pay, it enhances its value proposition by offering consumers more flexible payment options and driving increased transaction volume. The integration also streamlines the checkout process, reducing friction for shoppers and potentially boosting conversion rates for merchants.

The timing of this launch is particularly noteworthy given the evolving regulatory landscape and the changing consumer behavior surrounding BNPL. The FCA’s new regulations aim to strike a balance between fostering innovation in the BNPL sector and protecting consumers from financial harm. Klarna’s commitment to offering interest-free payment options, coupled with the FCA’s affordability checks, could help mitigate some of the risks associated with BNPL, while still providing consumers with a valuable financial tool.

The broader implications of this partnership extend beyond the immediate benefits for Klarna and Google Pay. It signals a growing acceptance of BNPL as a mainstream payment method and underscores the importance of collaboration between fintech companies and established technology platforms. As BNPL continues to gain traction, We see likely to play an increasingly significant role in the future of retail and consumer finance.
