Mavs Pursue Roster Reset, Klay Thompson Among Potential Trade Candidates
DALLAS – Following a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, the Dallas Mavericks are signaling a significant roster overhaul, with veteran guard Klay Thompson emerging as a potential trade candidate, .
The move comes after the Mavericks completed an eight-player trade with the Wizards, acquiring Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, and Marvin Bagley III, along with two first-round picks and three second-round picks. In exchange, Dallas sent Davis, Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum to Washington. The team is now focused on building around rookie Cooper Flagg, according to multiple reports.

Thompson, now in his second season with the Mavericks, has transitioned to a bench role but continues to provide valuable contributions. In 46 games this season, including eight starts, the four-time NBA champion is averaging 11.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 22.2 minutes per contest. He is shooting 37.9% from three-point range, making 2.9 triples per game.
According to a report from Dallas Hoops Journal, Thompson is one of two “main remaining trade candidates” for the Mavericks. The team believes his veteran presence and shooting ability could be attractive to contending teams, while freeing up roster space and potentially acquiring future assets.
Thompson is currently in the second year of a three-year contract with Dallas and is owed $17.5 million for the season. He will become an unrestricted free agent following that season.
Big man Daniel Gafford is also reportedly a potential trade candidate for the Mavericks, though the Atlanta Hawks, previously linked as a possible destination, recently acquired Jock Landale from the Utah Jazz.
The NBA trade deadline is .
