Klopp’s Phone Call Sparked Major Refereeing Change in Premier League
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp‘s post-match phone call to Jon Moss, than-director of the Professional Referees Association, led to a notable shift in how referee performance is analyzed in the English Premier League.
Moss, speaking to The Athletic, revealed that Klopp’s concerns following a 2-2 draw with Fulham in August 2022 prompted a reevaluation of referee positioning and analysis.
“I knew it was Klopp from his voice when he said he wanted to talk about Saturday’s match as he felt (Roberto) Firmino was barely touched,” Moss recalled.
Klopp’s main grievance, according to Moss, centered around referee Andy Madley‘s positioning during the match.
“Klopp told me, ‘Every time the referee took the ball we looked at Andy Madley like a ghost and blocked a pass,'” Moss explained. “Andy was in the position I expected him to be in, but it wasn’t good and suited the style of play.”
This conversation, Moss said, was a “game changer.”
“Klopp’s speech was a game changer for me overnight,” moss admitted. “So we sent the situation to the referee and everybody.those referees were monitoring.”
The incident highlighted a need for a more in-depth analysis of referee positioning and decision-making.
“So we decided at that point that we needed analysts,” Moss added,”because we needed to change the way we evaluate.”
The Premier League afterward increased the number of video analysts supporting referees, providing them with additional tools and perspectives to improve their performance.
Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of last season after a highly successful tenure, was succeeded by Dutch coach Arne Slot.
