The Nephrology Behind Human Longevity
Spanish medical specialists point to the protein Klotho, produced primarily by the kidneys, as playing a foundational role in slowing cellular aging and protecting tissues throughout the body.
Medical experts have increasingly focused on the biological mechanisms of longevity, distinguishing between merely adding years of life and maintaining functional health. According to Dr. Borja Quiroga, a specialist in nephrology at the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa and professor at the Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid, the primary obstacle in human aging is the progressive accumulation of damage to organs and cells.
Todos nos estamos muriendo de la misma enfermedad: el envejecimiento, pero lo que muchos desconocen es que una de las claves para frenarlo se encuentra en uno de los órganos más olvidados de nuestro cuerpo: los riñones.
Dr. Borja Quiroga
According to Dr. Quiroga, author of the books Por mis riñones que hoy como bien and El reto es no envejecer, the protein operates as a cellular guardian.
Combating Inflammation and Cellular Senescence
The protein protects blood vessels, the brain, and other vital tissues from damage while reducing inflammation. Furthermore, it inhibits cellular senescence—the biological process wherein cells stop dividing and transform into dysfunctional cells that accelerate organ deterioration.
Genetics, Daily Habits, and Physical Activity
While genetics account for approximately 20 percent of the aging process, daily habits and environmental factors dictate the remaining 80 percent, according to Dr. Quiroga.
Physical activity serves as a primary driver for renal production of the protein. Aerobic exercise, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and strength training all favor the synthesis of Klotho.
Preventative Care and Early Renal Evaluation
Additionally, medical evaluation for early-stage kidney disease remains a critical preventative step. Renal conditions often develop silently without immediate symptoms, yet they represent a primary factor in the depletion of Klotho levels and long-term health decline.
