The New York Knicks are doing their homework on potential replacements for Tom Thibodeau, with Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd among the candidates, according to sources. The coaching search comes after the Knicks’ recent playoff exit.
While the knicks have not yet requested permission to speak with Kidd, who has two years remaining on his contract extension, the possibility remains. Dallas general manager Nico Harrison and governor Patrick dumont have not yet discussed whether to allow Kidd to interview.
A trade could theoretically allow New York to hire kidd, but the Knicks’ draft assets are limited after acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets. They do possess a protected 2026 first-round pick from Washington, eight second-round picks, and swap rights in several future drafts.
Kidd previously interviewed for the Knicks job in 2020 before Thibodeau was hired. Thibodeau, despite leading the Knicks to their first back-to-back 50-win seasons in decades and a second-round victory over Boston, was let go after the team’s Eastern Conference finals defeat.
Thibodeau’s regular-season winning percentage of .579 is the highest among coaches with at least 300 games who have not reached the NBA Finals, according to ESPN Research.
Kidd, who concluded his playing career with the Knicks in 2013, previously coached the Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. In his four seasons with Dallas, the Mavericks have a 179-149 record. He guided them to the NBA Finals last year. The Dallas Mavericks have seen a mixed performance under his leadership.
Last season, Dallas traded Luka Doncic, a move that Harrison admitted he didn’t discuss with Kidd beforehand. The New York Knicks are looking to improve their team.
What’s next
The Knicks will likely continue their due diligence, weighing their options and potentially seeking permission to interview Kidd and other candidates as they look to fill their head coaching vacancy.
