Former Taipei Mayor Ko Wenzhe Detained in Connection with Beijing City Case

Former Taipei Mayor Ko Wenzhe was detained and banned from seeing visitors in connection with the Beijing Huacheng case. On the morning of September 7, some supporters gathered outside the Taipei Detention Center to express their support.

Ke Wenzhe was accused of conspiracy, bribery, and other crimes in the Jinghua City case. On September 5, the Taipei District Court ruled that he should be detained without permission. Ke Wenzhe was transferred to the Taipei Detention Center of the Department of Correction in Tucheng District, New Taipei City that night.

About 10 people gathered on the sidewalk opposite the detention center, holding the red flag of the “United Volunteer Army” and a poster saying “Come on, Chairman Ke, we are here to support you” and gave a speech in support of Ke Wenzhe.

Assemblies and processions are prohibited by law around the Taipei Detention Center, and the police separated the sidewalk from Lide Road in Tucheng District with railings. At 10:15 a.m., the police held up placards and Tucheng Police Division Chief Chen Jianlong broadcast a warning to disperse and leave. Only then did the supportive people leave one after another.

Chen Qisen, deputy director of the Taipei Detention Center of the Department of Corrections of the Ministry of Justice, told a reporter that today is a holiday, and the North detention center is not open to family visits, and there are no lawyers to visit. The relevant windows are closed and no meals are delivered from the outside.

Chen Qisen pointed out that the inmates stayed in the dormitories today and did not go outside. As for Ke Wenzhe’s daily routine, he could not explain the individual cases.

Ke Wenzhe’s Detention and Support

Ke Wenzhe is detained in a multi-person dormitory in the North Center. If he feels unwell, he can arrange for medical treatment.
