Rising Gaelic football star Kobe McDonald, 17, is poised to move to teh Australian Football League (AFL) after a standout debut senior season, the irish Examiner reported.
Rising Star’s Potential
McDonald, a midfielder from Crossmolina Deel Rovers, has attracted interest from several AFL clubs, including St Kilda, Brisbane, and Melbourne. He reportedly visited Melbourne earlier in 2023 and is expected to sign a contract contingent upon completing his Leaving Cert.
The deal is anticipated to be officially announced within the coming week.McDonald recently demonstrated his skill with a Man of the Match performance against Belmullet in the Mayo Senior Football championship quarter-final, scoring 1-5.
Family Legacy and Recent Success
Kobe mcdonald is the son of Ciarán mcdonald, a Mayo county legend and 2004 All-Star. Ciarán McDonald secured four Connacht titles during his playing career and later served as a coach for Mayo, including a role as a selector during their 2021 All-Ireland final appearance.
Kobe was also a member of the Connacht minor team that won their championship last year.
Irish Players in the AFL
McDonald’s potential move follows a trend of Irish players joining the AFL. Pearce Hanley departed Mayo for Australia in 2007, going on to play 169 games for the brisbane Lions and Gold Coast. Oisín Mullin, a two-time Young Footballer of the Year, currently plays for Geelong, having competed in the 2023 AFL Grand Final, where the Cats were defeated by brisbane.
Other Irish players currently in the AFL include Darragh Joyce of Kilkenny and Conor McKenna of Tyrone.
Other Potential AFL Recruits
Kobe McDonald is not the only rising star considering a move to the AFL. Kerry U20 player ben Murphy has been linked to Brisbane after a trial in august, and recently scored 0-3 in the Kerry Senior Football Championship final.
